Dear all,
thanks for attending the meetup today.
One of the things that was discussed, esp. in relevance to politics in Eastern
Europe, was the election of a persona-driven anticorruption populist president
as an alternative to a "rightist" populist party in what I claimed to be
Slovenia. After a brief fact-check, I have to admit to a blunder - Igor Matovič
was actually elected as a president of Slovakia, not Slovenia. Sorry for the
confusion.
If any of you wish to do any more in-depth reading on the matter, this article
is a good start:
https://carnegie.ru/commentary/81200
It is written by a Russian section of the Carnegie Endowment for World Peace -
which means they have no immediate incentive to write in an especially biased
way, as we discussed. It is also in Russian, but from experience - Google
Translating it (at least to English) renders a very readable version that I, as
a Russian speaker, can attest to being pretty accurate to the original - you'll
lose out on a few specific idioms at most.
Cheers,
RM
