Dear All,

I found a reather inexpensive elmarit 35mm with the "little cleaning
marks on front element" description. The dealer seems to be very
honest - I have allready purchased 50 & 90mm summicrons from it, and
the lenses turned out to be better than described. So the question is:
do little cleaning marks effect the image? (if we, of course, take
"little cleaning marks on front element" for granted).

Thank you,
Miha

Hi Miha!

"Little cleaning marks on the front element" are usually caused by someone cleaning the lens without ensuring that the cleaning paper or cloth they're using is clean. Or, that there was grit on the lens, when cleaned (owner forgot to blow it off, first!) and the grit scratched the lens.

In most cases, the scratches are only in the coating. Even if they are in the top layer of the glass, the would not make any significant difference to the performance of the lens, except that they might add a wee bit of flare, in just the right circumstances.

I guess the real question is not "are they OK", but "How many are there?" If the number is small, and you cannot notice them without really looking hard, you probably won't be able to tell the results from the best of the breed ... but you will be able to tell the difference between the prices!

As you may know, I got a stone chip in the front element of one of my Zuiko zooms. The "ding" did show in photos where I had a broad, flat, white area... but in the end, it showed in fewer than 6 of 3,500 photos I took with it, that way. (I got it back, in record time, from repair, last week.) This stone chip was far more serious than any "cleaning marks", and did not prevent me from using the lens to make a substantial amount of coin.

I'd go with Philippe's advice. Get it, try it, and if you're happy, keep it (assuming the price is right). If not, send it back. Simple!

Cheers!
