Subject: [LRflex] Re: R cameras
Hi
I had a number of similar problems with my R3 - particularly in low
temperatures. I agree with Herman it comes down to circuit board which was
made from porcelain. After 30 years this porcelain becomes very fragile and
cracks. I discussed this at length with Peter at CRR camera repairs (ex
Leica Solmns repair technician) and he confirmed that it is a problem with
these old R3 cameras, in particular the porcelain circuit boards. The breaks
can be identified and fixed (same price as CLA), however it is highly likely
that another crack will occur in 6 months or giving another problem. If you
make this repair 2 or 3 times than you will have spend the same money as a
replacement camera. In the end I took the very hard decision to abandon my
R3 and spend the extra money to buy a R6. This has a totally manual shutter
and thus cannot suffer these electrical problems that plague the old circuit
boards in the R3. I'm very happy with the R6 and obviously kept all my old
lenses, but also annoyed that I lost my old 'baby'. I do wonder why
porcelain was used as the circuit board base instead of the more normal
resin based material.

Hope this helps

Ross
