Doug,
you had focussed a bit short? the grasses in front of the "subject" are in
focus.
In fact the ears melting away in the back ground are not of much concern
since the face + paws are in very details.
The fluff on the nose attracts because it is very central when reading the
picture. You have gracefully chosen not to "photoshop" it away..
This picture is more attractive since the squirrel is taken from an lower
POV. the previous squirrel has the disadvantage to be photographed from
above it.

similar to a photo I posted recently
(http://www.wildlightphoto.com/mammals/cgsq01.html) but facing the camera,
cleaner background, more obvioulsly eating the poppy seed pod - does the bit
of fluff on its nose bother you? What about the out-of-focus ears?
