Hi Charlie: You asked: >I was amazed and delighted at the range of application specific >normals from the Big Iron users on the list. Any field Questars or >MTOs in use out there? For many years I owned a Celestron C-90 (1000mm f11) spotting scope, which I used only for my Eclipse photos. When we were to be aboard ship for the 1998 eclipse, I was afraid of the ships motion, and thus purchased a used MTO (500mm f8). In the end, it was a waste, as the shorter FL required more magnification to get the same image (sun) size on my wall. We have a set of four -11x14" prints (in 15x19" frames) on our family room, one each for '79, '91, '94 and '98. To get the solar image on the MTO frames to fill most of the 11x14" print, they were cropped such that, at full size, the print would have been 40x60"!!! They're OK! Not great, but OK. As somebody said .. "You've got to have the moose head on the wall!" The Celestron and MTO were fine for that sort of image, but I found them both difficult to use and monstrously heavy, compared to the Telyt 400/f6.8, and sold both. As well, neither one would deliver the contrast, sharpness or detail that the Telyt will. OTOH, the MTO in particular, was really quite good and very inexpensive. I would certainly recommend to anyone on a budget who wants to try "Big Iron" as you call it! For the next eclipse (July 22, '09), I plan to take the 400 Telyt + 2x. On the DMR, that gives a FOV equal to 1100 mm... a perfect choice for eclipse work. This combination is lighter and the lens breaks down, for easy transport in an airline-legal carry-on bag, while yielding better resolution. Speed (a wee bit slower) is not relevant, as shooting directly at the sun, even during totality, offers lots of light! Does that help?
