If your buddy ran the lens off the rack and pinion, then you have the 560/5.6
Telyt with the Televid rapid focus pistol grip focusing. The 560/6.8 that
Peter has, uses the "Trombone Focus" system.
Unfortunately, I know nothing of the 560/5.6, other than having tried one in a
store for 5 minutes, some 20 years ago. Sorry.
And there doesn't seem to be much about it's repair on the web, either. :-(

I have a lens that I loaned to a friend. He ran the focus tube off the
rack ( rack and pinion mechanism). I have been chicken to fix it. What
is involved in taking the mechanism apart for resetting into the correct
position?
I have the Visoflex M version.

No es problema, Peter.
If done properly, the Telyt's should only need lubrication once every 40
years or so. The biggest potential problem with the Telyt's is over
lubrication.

attention. :) Yes, it's an amazingly simple design, like you said; and
I found the screws that you mentioned. So, when I get some white
grease later this evening I'll give it a go. Thanks very much. The f-
stop of 32 has me intrigued. I have never had a lens that exceeded f-
22 before. Does this mean I'm half way to being part of the F64 Club?

I had the same problem with my 400/6.8, when I first got it nearly
20 years ago. (Unless you've got the pistol grip 5.6 version, the
focusing tube is the same on both.)
The lens is easy to disassemble. Remove the lens head and you can
see inside the tube, where you'll find that the focusing runs on 3
chrome plated rails.
Clean the old grease off the rails using a clean, soft cloth
moistened with Ronsonol Lighter Fluid. It's better than gas for
cleaning old oil, easier to manage in the house, and leaves no
residue.
I then lubricate the rails with the tiniest amount of white grease.
I used a now 50 year old tin of Valvoline X-All, but any light,
white grease should do. I put a tiny (and I do mean tiny!) amount
on my finger, dabbed it on the rails and ran the rails back & forth
50 to 75 times, to spread it out evenly. Remove any excess.
That as it! It was still working perfectly when I sold it last
February.
Have fun with it. It's a nice piece of glass! And, I want to see
your results!

Good afternoon. Could I please ask for some suggestions as to what
to use to lubricate the slide zoom on a Leica Telyt 560mm / 6.8? I
have been given the lens today by an elderly friend who has not
used the lens in decades. The glass is clear and bright and the
diaphram works fine; but the zoom slide is a little stiff. I have
been gently sliding it repeatedly, but it seems to need a touch
more than physical manipulation. Any suggestion would be greatly
appreciated, as I'm holding myself back from the handy dandy
misting of WD40. Thank you.
