Hi Richard !
I've been working as a graphic designer since 1978. Already many years! The
best times are long gone, especially with the crisis we are suffering here,
in Spain...
Actually, for a few years, I enjoy most in my second job as an instructor in
Taiji Quan!
Of course the information will be useful with regard to the screen with
reticle marks and help to manual focus. Something new to test !

graphic designer eh? Well those are some of my favorite kinds of people. I
worked for 3years in the student promotions office at my university as the
photographer for the school magazine. Mostly I copped a desk and hung out
there between classes and became the twenty something old guy mascot :-)
with the artists and designers working there making signs, posters, etc for
student organizations. Good times.
I had a thought about the cropping you're doing with your 5D images: Have
you considered getting a focus screen with cropping marks on it? I believe
Canon has one with reticle marks in fixed locations and the Katz Eye folks,
iirc, will let you order one with custom crop marks and even order an
integrated manual focus assist device.
Don't know if that would be helpful for you, but can't know unless I share
it!
