Thank you, for your kind words. I rather liked the shot, myself.
A long lens? Surprisingly, no. He was grazing by the side of the highway
and seemed as curious about me as I as about him.
I used my favourite lens ... the 50~200/2.8-3.5 Oly zoom, set at (so the exif
tells me) 112mm - so roughly a 225mm equivalent focal length. Other techie
stuff: f4.4 @ 1/400th and ISO 400.
He let me get amazingly close... much to my surprise. What made the shot, for
me, was the great condition of his fur and his antlers - still in velvet. Elk
(or Wapiti, to be more correct) grow new antlers, every year. The "velvet"
provides nourishment to the growing antlers, but once the antlers start to
harden, they rub the velvet off ... and until it's all gone they can look quite
"ratty". But this fellow was in find condition, all round.
He just stood and posed. The light was good and the rest is history.
