Hello Flexers,

Mindful of David’s experience traveling to Casper for the total eclipse,
Esther and I and two friends went to the San Juan Islands - south of the
Gulf Islands east of Vancouver Island - just to have a look.

When we got to
the US Immigration Post at the ferry terminal in Sidney BC my friend Peter
took out his passport and stuttered “Oh Oh - it’s expired!!”

He handed the passport
over to the US Immigration Officer who looked at it and said, “You know, sir,
that your passport is expired?” Peter said “yes - just noticed it.”

The Officer asked “When were you last in the States?” Peter replied “New York -
last October.”
The Officer went inside to check his computer and then came out and said “We
have put a note on
your file that as a courtesy we are allowing you to visit the US despite having
an expired passport.
We didn’t want to disappoint your friends in your visit to the San Juans.”

And so we drove happily on to the ferry and off to Friday Harbor for a very
pleasant four days -
astonished at our phenomenal luck and the kindness of strangers.
