I checked with my foster son who is a Mississippi River pilot, and he said:
" If you towed with them behind you’d have no control and the other reason
is draft. Pushing multiple barges with only a 10 to 12-foot draft The big
boys push up to 40 loads at a time."

Everywhere you look, on the Danube, there are barges carrying a myriad------
of goods.
Unlike ocean barges, which are invariably pulled, the river barges are
almost universally pushed along. I'm not sure just why.
