Good Morning!
Many of you will be familiar with the concept of a "Juried show".
But, in case you're not, in a regular art show, you pay your money and you get
a table & that chance to sell your photos, potter, paintings, what-have-you.
In a "juried" art show you have to first present samples of your work, to be
approved by a jury of other artists/artisans. If the quality of your work does
not pass muster, you will not be allowed to participate in the show.
In Merritt, about a half hour drive south of us, there is "The Creative
Company" which is a "juried" artist's co-op. Only 18 members, no duplication
of crafts allowed. (One potter, one weaver, one photographer, on painter, etc.,
etc.) And any prospective member must pass a jury of the existing members, in
order to join.
I was in, purchasing some jewelry for Rose for Valentines day (one of their
members is an excellent silversmith) and got to talking with the sales lady
about joining as she'd told me that their existing photographer was leaving. A
week later I went in, talked some more and picked up a membership application,
to be filled out & returned. Whilst there, I left the lady my business card.
Rose and I talked it over, decided we'd give it a try, for a minimum of a year.
So I got my ducks in a row and was to go down to Merritt, the following
Wednesday.
However, the Tuesday evening, prior to going, I received an email, which read:
"We have all viewed your images on your web-site. Some of us even own them.
We have all voted 'yes', so, you are approved. Are you going to apply?"
Now, I've never been turned down, for a Juried show. (I know many who have.)
But this is the first time I've been approved by a jury before I'd even
applied! A record of some sort, to be sure!

I sometimes wonder how a small, arts & crafts store can survive in a backwater
place like Merritt, (pop, 7,200) but they've successful since 1989, so they
must be doing something right!
