Subject: [LRflex] Thoughts on the camera market...
G'Mornin' everyone!
We hear all the moaning about companies not making any money in cameras (other
than Leica, natch).
But, in my mind, I always thought that the firms had built massively, to
accommodate the boom in digital cameras; but, that somehow, sales - though far
lower than before - were still greater than the film camera days.
Apparently, not so. Checking my own "A Brief History of Photography", I find
that film cameras (all types) peaked in 1996 at 36.7 million units. In 2018,
digital camera makers shipped only 19.5 million pieces ... barely over half of
the film camera peak, and it's still dropping.
There is going to have to be a shakeout somewhere along the line.
Either cameras are going to get significantly more expensive (same costs, lower
unit production = either a higher selling price or corporate losses); something
we are already seeing - or some of the smaller, weaker makers will close up
shop.
Personally, I worry about Pentax/Ricoh, whist Tony Northrup worries about
Nikon. ( https://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/category/news/ ;)
Others have recently worried about Olympus, but Oly's camera division drives
their medical arm - which dominates the world-wide endoscope market, so for
Oly, losses in cameras are simply a cost of doing business in the very
profitable medical trade.
Just my two cents worth.
David.
