Hi and thank you, Bill. Your comment about a FOJ plant in Tampa in that era
made me go look into the history of FOJ and Florida. Thanks for the prompting.
I had known vaguely about the early years of the industry and that Bing Crosby
had a hand in the business-side of the industry in the early 1950s or so; but
on that point I have to confess that I knew of Bing’s participation by the way
of the banter between Bob Hope and Bing within the “Road to…” everywhere films.
So, thank you for prompting my education in the process my family has supplied
oranges to for decades. If anyone else is interested in a brief glimpse into

Nice to see that the Valencias I grew up with in Tampa are still around. I
grew up across the river from one of the first frozen orange juice plants in
Florida, built during or right after WW2.

Valencia orange crop down here, and I thought that y'all might find a couple
of images of the crop interesting. Briefly, the Valencia crop is one of the
few ag crops that need more than a year to mature before harvesting; and
that makes it particularly vulnerable to weather as it has to get through
what we call winter down here - particularly the “Alberta Clipper”
cold-fronts that occasionally rip down across the continent. These images
are from 2019, last year’s crop, and we’ll be picking this year the little
nibs of green that appear under the flowers in the images from last year.
