Don't act like a predator, act more like a prey animal (except when near large predators!). A predator stares, a prey animal responds to unusual sounds and activity. 2. Don't stare. Look at lots of things, fiddle with the camera or your phone or tie your shoelaces... just don't pay particular attention to the bird. Same applies to the lens, don't keep it pointed at the bird. Use it to glance at the bird, glance at other things, whatever. The bigger the lens aperture the more threatening it will appear: the 400mm f/6.8 isn't a big problem, a 400mm f/2.8 is another matter entirely. 3. Don't try to sneak closer. Wander slowly in (apparently) no particular direction, while actually getting in position for optimum lighting & backgrounds. 4. Mumble to yourself, talk quietly to the bird, fart, burp, whatever you need to to, just don't be silent. Silence is associated with sneaky behavior. http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/ardeidae/greg03.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/scolopacidae/spsa00.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/scolopacidae/leye06.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/phasianidae/sogr02.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/phasianidae/witu10.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/phasianidae/witu12.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/turdidae/mobl00.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/hirundinidae/clsw00.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/icteridae/buor00.html http://wildlightphoto.com/birds/fringillidae/brfi00.html Doug Herr Birdman of Sacramento http://www.wildlightphoto.com ------ Unsubscribe or change to/from Digest Mode at: http://www3.telus.net/~telyt/lrflex.htm Archives are at: //www.freelists.org/archives/leicareflex/
