Agreed, Peter. On both counts. :-)
I was up at 4am on Eclipse day, studying the early weather reports, before
making the final decision as to where to head - as we planned a 3 hour drive,
either east or west of Casper, that morning. In the end we went east and it
turned out to be the perfect choice... much less traffic than in
Shoshoni/Riverton areas (west) or Glendo (a bit further east & south of Orin
Junction).
I was able to check on Glendo, as I missed the turnoff at Orin (it was labeled
LUSK - which is some 41 miles to the east of Orin). There it took me 10
minutes to get from the off ramp to the on-ramp (500 feet?) so I could head
North again. It delayed us about 30 minutes, but we had lots of time, so it was
OK. Glendo is a bigger town (Pop. 203) and must have had 30 to 40,000 people
there. Talk about a zoo! (Glendo made the mistake of encouraging people to
come ... and come they did! Now they're seeking donations to cover the
expense!)
There were absolutely not traffic jams in our part of Wyoming (other than the
Glendo interchange), though we heard many stories, in the press, about Oregon.
No shortages of gas, either. Though after hearing stories of Oregon stations
running out, we did take a 20 liter/5 US gal gas can with us, which we filled
in Washington State and drained into the tank, in Washington State, on the way
home.
Did anybody experience the hyped-up reports of traffic jams or gas shortages
during the eclipse ... anywhere in America?
David.
That's what I said, too. There are very few things that would get me up------
at 3:00am, just to be sure that I wasn't thwarted by hyped-up reports
about traffic. But this was one of them.
I wouldn't paint it on my car, though. Best not to let your opponents
know your strategy... :-)
