Hi Bill!

Yup!  Both methods work.  I use the self-timer because [a] it works, 
without the even slight risk of vibration that might be induced by 
the cable release motion and [b] because I'm usually too lazy to go 
and find my cable release.  Like you, I've first flipped the mirror 
lever to the "up" position, so it will pre-fire.

And, yes, other than a few internal bits to make the R8 work for 
slickly with the DMR, the R8 and R9 are, in function, identical bodies

As for blocking off the eyepiece with the eyepiece shutter, it's a 
good idea... or so "they" say.  But I now don't bother, for I have 
NEVER had it make any practical difference to the exposure.
