I have collected images of interesting signs, for decades. It's something I
teach all my students.
Not that they should collect photos of signs, but that they should collect
photos of something that interests them.
I know folks who collect images of interesting pub signs. Others who "shoot'
every cat they see. Another who photographs ceramic house numbers, and so
forth. It does not matter what "floats your boat"... the point is that while
you looking for whatever it is that you wish to photograph, you see tons of
other things worthy of a shot, that you would likely otherwise miss. We look,
but we do not see.
Having something to "hunt" for, whilst you're out and about, helps you learn
the art of observation, and makes you a better photographer.
In all the years of looking for signs, there are two that I somehow missed.
One was in FanTan Alley, in Victoria, years ago. A small shop had it's hours
of operation posted on the door. It simply read: "Open when open. Closed when
Closed."
The other was last fall, when I saw a large sign, said to myself that I must
stop and take the photo ... and somehow, didn't. I drove right by.
It was at the corner of the Alaska Highway and Highway 37 (just west of Watson
Lake), Kown as the Steward/Cassiar Highway, it heads down the west side of BC,
to Stewart BC and Hyder, Alaska. After all, it's not often you see a sign which
says: "South - to Alaska"!
