David, No, you're not crazy. IMHO, Herr Kaufmann is simply selling to a segment of the market that has money and a "need" to buy. At this point, he can't afford to turn down any customers who have cash in hand. It may be inconsistent but the cash is real and if it helps Leica meet the "need" of the market segment I am in, i.e., a septuagenarian occasional buyer of new camera bodies and used lenses, so much the better for me. All the best, Bill
Truth be told, Bill, I have no objection to "collector" series... they do, as you point out, generate a terrific amount of cash ... something I suspect Leica is short on, just now, with the expenses of ramping up the S2 for production.
Still, my fear is that Leica had relied on such collector cameras far too much, in past, selling their "glory", not their products. With the M8, it seemed we were seeing a shift to a more aggressive manufacturer ... such as they were in the 1950's, when their "B" series stood the photographic world on it's collective ear.
This white beast makes that idea seem a little more distant. Time, and the S2, will tell, I suppose.
