That is one complex lens, let me tell you. Have a look. I guess it is no
wonder it costs a pretty penny. I am surprised that lensrentals took it
apart that far, but I guess they know what they are doing.

I have always been puzzled about the R10 or DMR2 also.
Methinks it was rooted in the optical and mechanical roots of E. Leitz, with
little or no in house champion of the existing and coming digital world.
Remember that the DMR was sub-contracted and after that firm was bought by
Hasselblad, IIRC, Leica essentially gave up on digital thinking for several
years, until the M8.
Leica was, I am afraid, blinded by their past, preferring optical and
mechanical products in which they are steeped. Digital thinking is and
always will be second class at Leica I am afraid, though I also imagine it
has been widely adopted in their manufacturing and quality assurance
departments.
The SL to my mind is an electro-mechanical masterpiece, with just enough
digital thinking to incorporate a necessary digital sensor because they have
to and nothing more.
Notice the continued stream of new and faster lenses being marketing,
optical-mechanical marvels, but little if any advances in digital utility
that I can see.
With ISOs in the hundreds of thousands, I don’t need an f/1.4, f/1.0 or
f/0.95 lens nor am I wiling to pay for one. This can’t be Leica’s future.
So it goes…

Hi Bill. As far as Leitexing R lenses, I have done that. It does
work,
but in a kludging way, at least for me. The optical viewfinder is
indeed superior to an EVF in my mind, but a modern optical viewfinder is
not really designed for manual focusing. No split image or any other
focusing aids. It is darn near impossible to focus that way. There is
a focus conformation light, but it really does not work well. It can be
lit through a few degrees of rotation of the focus ring. I have even
attached a viewfinder magnifier with not much luck. The only way that
really works if you want to shoot wide open or need critical focus is to
use live view, so in other words, an EVF on the back of the camera.Â
Magnify for fine focus as long as the light is OK to see the LED screen
on the back. I do use them, especially the 100 APO and the 35-70/4
because they are much better than anything Nikon has, but cannot use
them for anything that is moving or needs a quick snap.
I know there are replacement view screens for some digitals, but they
have other problems like with metering, so I have not tried any of them.
Now slap those lenses on my R8 and see what a real viewfinder is suppose
to be like.
