I agree. I wish others had taken the gamble on the Foveon technology. My Nikon/Fuji S2 has some slight difference from a straight Nikon sensor and dumb old me - has` forgotten WHAT it is. I bought my S2 used and hoped some day to buy an S5 - but they seem to have disappeared from the market. Fuji was promoting a forensic//IR model last year - but I think it is now not on their retail price list. --- On Sat, 4/3/10, Richard Ward <ilovaussiesheps@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Richard Ward <ilovaussiesheps@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [LRflex] Re: SD14 people and skin To: leicareflex@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Saturday, April 3, 2010, 5:36 PM Hi Walter & Mike, I wanted to make an observation on your comments regarding Sigma's SLRs, I'm seeing some 'rough' analogies to the challenges Leica is negotiating regarding the Digital Leica cameras. You first note thinking they can't keep up or compete (assuming Can/Nik) then observe that they don't seem to be really playing on the same field. I'd say Sigma has carved or found a niche for their slr's and is trying to make some profits supplying that market. The camera body development's and the fovenon sensor's development has to be paid for some way or another and I laud them for giving it a go. The successes of sub 20mp 4/3rds cameras lately will hopefully give them some clues to growing the market they have for the Fovenon cameras. The Megapixel wars might be seeing some of their final skirmishes in the '35mm' scale arena. The Narrow markets and growing niche products is part n parcel of what Leica is trying to survive and thrive under (fingers crossed for it - They could use good luck!). I want Leica around, I wish they played in the SLR 35mm sized market, or return to it - don't find it likely - but who knows. I think they've embraced surprising product launches and camera types. Who knows what kind of partnerships and things they'll dive into attempting to make a niche or drive a market. They don't seem to have hesitated scraping profits out of the P&S market and the x1 seems to give the big sensor "little camera" market a popular product. I wouldn't put it past them to give a Fovenon R Mount a whirl. Who'd a thunk they'd be using Kodak (the dead film company!) to put CCD sensors in their M cameras! Startled me to hear it, that's for sure. By the way - there's a 'logic flaw' in a sentence that says "can't compete with (Can/Nik) but don't really play on the same field". If they aren't on the same field, they aren't competitors then are they, to carry the 'sports analogy' to an annoying extreme! :-) Ha Ha. I hope the megapixel wars. ________________________________ From: Walter Kramer <walter.kramer@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: leicareflex@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Sat, April 3, 2010 9:21:48 AM Subject: [LRflex] Re: SD14 people and skin Mike, As far as I know Sigma will shortly release the SD15 but with the same sensor as the SD14 and improved ergs, ISO and software. I don't think they can keep up or compete but it doesn't seem to me that they are really playing in the same field. People who use Sigma cameras use them because they like the results they get from the sensor and they put up with the shortcomings of the camera which are well known and mostly to do with shooting in low light, poor review screen and slow write speed.
