Thanks to all for some very useful observations and tips. I was struck by Sonny's remark that:
I was a late comer to raw, but I'm totally convinced that raw is like negative and fine jpeg is like transparency.
Seems a pretty good parallel to me. I'll now start experimenting with RAW+ JPEG on my 'new' M8.
BTW, anyone out there actually using the Leica-supplied Capture One software? I can either go that route or use PS and RAW Converter, with which I'm much more familiar.
