The film scratching was real, an isolated batch of cameras, and "Jay" made a
big stink about it. "Jay" was one of many aliases (each with its own phony
background) this person used. He often posted under several names to make his
issues seem more widespread than they were.
If your camera has the bad part that causes the problem, the fix is simple and
inexpensive.
