Gary. I have not tried that solution with my Nikon. However, on a Canon body
you do not need to replace the mount on the R lens and the adapter has not
lenses in it. That was the first route I took. It was the only game in town
and had lots of drawbacks as far as metering went. So when the ability to
mount R on Nikon came about, I went that route. And you mentioned MFT. The
adapters for MFT do not need any lenses, either. So in both these cases you
would not need to loose the ability to mount the R lenses on both your R camera
and the digital camera.
I bought a cheap adapter to try my R lenses on my wife’s Olympus and it works
fine. I also have a Sony adapter that I have used on a few bodies in a store.
And of course, David has used R glass on his Olympus cameras with great
success. He is the one to tell you about that. My gripe with this is mainly
the gripe I have with Sony/Fuji solutions and that is the EVF. My eyes are not
fans of EVF’s. I know they have some advantages as far as WYSIWYG, even more
so that an SLR, but I have never gotten use to them. They have gotten better
since I first started looking in the direction of a smaller camera way back
when Nikon introduced the Nikon 1. The lag is less, and you can see more
details. Last time I checked in earnest about a 6 months ago, Fuji was still
better than Sony for my eyes. MFT was too small. Leica SL was the best. But
compared to my R8, none are even in the same ballpark, let alone in the same
game. And for manual focus, that is important. I had not shot with my R for
many years until the other day. I was anticipating having some difficulty
focusing, like I have on my D750, but no. I put my 90/2.8 and 35/2.0 on and
focus was a breeze. Or at least I think it was. I have not developed the film
yet. But things snapped in the viewfinder easily. Amazing.
Everybody’s eyes and tolerances are different, so give them a try. It is nice
that you can rent a body or two and buy a few cheap adaptors to give them a
spin for a longer time than you can in a store. When I really cannot handle
carrying my D750 and gear around that is what I will have to do. Narrow down
my selection in store as far as feel and features, then rent the bodies and
give them a spin before deciding on the lesser evil.

One other thing, I have read mixed reviews on the Metabones focal reducer. I
know with many Leica users may feel that putting a lens in between the body is
blasphemy, but if it brings it back to near stated focal length I would venture
into APS-C and even MFT if the image holds up. Did anyone try this with R
lenses? And if so which body did you use it on?
