I agree David, but those who advised the circular are very experienced and
well known. The other issue involves the size of the polarizer on both of
the R zoom lenses I asked about. One of our members kindly noted that the
thin version would not produce vignetting, and I think such "thin version"
is the way to go.

OK guys... I agree. HOWEVER, I used an old style, linear polarizing filter on my R5 & R6 with no apparent ill effects, for years. (I know, the metering is supposed to be 'off' with a liner polarizer, but I could find no problem with the exposures!)
When I finally indulged in a circular polarizer for my R8, I discovered that the amount of darkening of the sky, along with all the other effects one uses a polarizer for were noticeably lessened. So much so, that I'm tempted to go back to the old, cheaper and seemingly better linear model.
What gives here?
