Agreed with Doug's explanation, I think it could also be the result of some leakage through the film cartridge slit if not tight enough and film (completely) wound up inside , and was exposed to light over a long period out of its canister. Which photos are affected, beginning or end of roll i.e. inner or outer section of the film? This would also account for the edges to be ok. Since it doesn't extend into the sprocket holes I believe the camera's film gate is involved, which rules out processing, or any handling outside the camera. This should also rule out a leak through the camera's back. I don't think it's lens flare because it doesn't seem like there was a bright light source above and outside the picture area.
