[LRFlex] Permanence issues - WAS 'leicareflex Digest V2 #132'

Here's a thought. What will happen in 30+ years when my kids/grandkids
discover, amongst my effects, some negatives that look interesting but want
prints? Will they be able to go to a local shop to have them printed? Will
negative printing, slide projecting equipment be readily available in the
future? Garage/oddment sales may be the only option.

A number of people have already noted that film is available from fewer venues
than ever before. As the source material becomes less available, so too will
the infrastructure that is needed to support it. I won't make financial sense
for businesses to maintain it.

Computer files need only a storage medium and some software that can read them.
 Not much infrastructure there.

I'm not arguing for or implying that digital is superior. I'm just more
concerned about the future of analog technology.

Am I missing something?

G'Mornin' Peter...

Yes, I know how long digital files will last given a good backup policy. And I,
like most good photographers, will make multiple backups, and renew them every
few years.

That being said, there are the issues of format changes and, more specifically,
the problems for the millions of "happy snappers", who record the growing up of
their kids with the intentions of looking at the photos when those same kids
are much older. These folks don't have a good backup policy, and I am afraid
that if something more permenant doesn't come along, they will lose the lot.

Perhaps I worry too much!

Cheers!

David.
