Good morning to everyone. All this conversation about auto racing got me
thinking about images that I have from the past, so I went “diggin’” and these
are a few of the happy memories. Very dirty slides from 1979 when at age 21 I
was somewhat nervousily trying to focus a forgotten Vivitar lens mounted on a
35mm Vivitar body on a fairly well-known subbject at the SCCA National Run-Off
Championships at Road Atlanta outside Gainsville GA. The “subject” went on to
have a great weekend that year and won his first of many SCCA class
championships with Nissan.

images back into the light from a dark box… :)

HI PETER,
Well my son I'll have a look around here and see what I may still have? But
as you say,
"any negs I might have are long gone into the National Archives air
controlled vaults on the other side of Canada from where I now live.
But I still remember some of the crashes I photographed or those ME and my
cars were involved that I managed to survive and not get killed. I shall
search my memory banks and see what I can find from the multi years of the
yester years.
Including being hit while in the infield when a flying wheel off a car in a
race hit me!!!!
And yes I ended up in the hospital!! OUCH!!!!
CHEERS,

Dr Ted, they are probably in the treasure trove of images that you donated to
the National Archives, but I feel that I can speak for most here to say that
it’d be great to see images of you from back then! I have seen images of US
stock racers from those days, way before NASCAR became big, bright, and
shiney, and those B&W images are just something everyone should see and enjoy
with all the dirt, grime, and bent metal bodies… The thought of you taking
photos from the passenger side of a racer back then is really fun! Way more
interesting than today’s “GoPro” videos, though I have to admit today's
images and videos are exciting - still the thought of someone operating a
manual focus camera from inside the car while on a active track has just got
to bring a smile to everyone.
Best regards,
Peter S.

THANKYOU DAVID & PETER FOR ALLOWING ME SOME WILD & CRAZY MEMORIES OF DRIVING
DAYS LONG GONE BY! EVEN THOUGH i RARLY TOOK PHOTOS FROM RACING CARS, I NEVER
DROVE & TOOK PICTURES AT THE SAME TIME! I KNOW I'M A BIT CRAZY?? BUT I'M NOT
THAT CRAZY! :-) I always rode and took pictures at the same time while
having the hottest driver driving!

For you... today... special ... because it's Thursday ... the first Thursday
this week...
I have created a page with my crop of the shot, with a second version of,
roughly half the frame, below.
http://www.furnfeather.ca/look/twoviews.html
I don't think it works as well, because there is too much of the chain link
fence (sight lines for photographers are lousy at the Merritt Speedway) and
too much empty dirt, but your mileage may vary. Widening the view further
simply brings in light & timing stands, and a lot more dirt track.
I'm now curious to hear the different 'takes' people have on this.
Everyone? Anyone?
David.
Nice shot, David. Is it too late and would it be too much trouble to see------
the image at about ½ of the original frame? I'm wondering how
differently more of the original frame would convey the story of "No
Brakes!" :)
Best regards,
Peter S.

One more, from last weekend's Stock Car Race, in Merritt.
It shows what happens when brakes fail, at speed...

This is about 1/4 of the original frame & shot from the stands.
Enjoy!
David.
