I can only put it down to storage conditions, for I have no idea how & where
they were stored for nearly 80 years.
However, it's amazing what can be done to recover such damaged slides with only
the simplest of software ... in this case FastStone Image Viewer - a great
little piece of FREE software (windoze only) that I recommend for all my
students.
This is an example of what can be done, with just 90 seconds of time and no
expense.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but it's surprising what can be
rather easily accomplished.
I have other shots that are so bad I'm not sure I can recover them with
anything. Of course, in such cases the solution is to convert them to B&W.

I am not surprised because my earliest Kodachrome slides were in
1955 and they are still in very good shape.
We are all fortunate to have had Eastman, Agfa, Ilford and many
others whose support made the photography business possible as well
as our personal hobbies.

This afternoon, I took one slide and "played" with it. Not too
much. Just ran it through LUCID (a Canadian-made "auto-tweaker"),
as part of a batch of about 250, and then used clone & heal to
remove some of the dust.
The shot is of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a prominent cultural
center in Mexico City, even today. But this photo was taken in
February, of 1942!
I was absolutely astounded by the colour it is possible to pull
out of 77 year and 2 month old Kodachrome (ASA 10) slide!
