In a message dated 25/01/2011, Richard Ward said ... >RW- Hi David, >RW- I do agree that your shot doesn't have a lot of clarity to it, but >RW- I'm of a mind that good panning shots at low shutter speeds are about >RW- the swishes and swoops contrasting so much with the 'sort of sharp' >RW- subject you're 'panning with' they are perceived as 'sharp. As for the >RW- shot itself, I do have a thought and a query. To start, I am wondering >RW- whether your Camera or Lens has Image Stabilization and whether it was >RW- switched off? The Cyclist has what -might- be an odd unidirectional >RW- fuzziness that seems out of place in a Panned Photograph. I'd have >RW- expected more left to right blurriness (if I'm expressing myself >RW- well). Maybe an IS system was being counter-productive and produced >RW- that effect - for example: some earlier Canon IS Systems supposedly >RW- didn't play well with some kinds of Panning Techniques and produced >RW- odd visual effects and blurriness. My other thought is to wonder if >RW- your Shutter Speed was low enough to produce a 'distinctive' panning >RW- technique swishiness to the image? Hello again, Richard! You can see the horizontal movement in the blurred "snow", behind the cyclist. But, I suspect you are right ... I'd forgotten to turn the (very effective) in-body IS off! I also left the camera on automagic, as it was a "spur of the moment" decision to try... so the shutter speed was a bit high. As I mentioned to Philippe, they'll be racing again, next weekend, so I'm going to go and re-try, using the proper techniques, rather than simply panning, with everything else, as usual. >RW- Anyway - love these Ice Racing images. IIRC: you posted some great >RW- ones early last year, as well. I did, and thank you. I'll likely have a few more from last Sunday, but not until tomorrow. Off to the "Big Smoke", shortly.
