A few years ago I confronted the problem. Someone once said "you either
have a system, or you have a heap."
I store the negatives in plastic sheets that are also used for contact
sheet printing. The the contact sheet goes into the same plastic
sleeve as the negatives, and the page gets inserted into a three ring
binder. At this point, the binder is labeled, dated, and goes into an
air tight plastic storage box. At least if I've found the contact
sheet, I've found the negative, too.
I certainly wish that I had started back in the 60's with a tight "date,
roll, frame" system. It would solve the problem of the "where is that
shot?" if one had the filing number. I have a disgustingly large number
of contact sheets and negatives with only a most approximate date. I
can't understand why I didn't date everything. and there is the awkward
parallel problem of all the color negative material, which tends to sit
in its one hour processor envelopes, in plastic and hermetically sealed
"shoe boxes" and is more or less in chronological order. I don't shoot
slides, generally, but that would generate another, parallel archive.
Beyond a few extra folders on my hard drive, I have not yet confronted
the digital issues, as well.
I've lately concluded that I should spend a lot more time on "output" in
the form of finished prints. They are a photographer's legacy; who will
ever want to sort through the heap?
