Phillipe,
Nikon (and I believe Canon, Tamrom, Sigma, Vivitar, etc.) have made 400mm zoom
and fixed focal length lenses for not too much money for years. Used, they. are
even more reasonable.
Image quality? Hm, not A+++, but for the price and intended use, you can't
complain. That market is amazing to me.
My sons use a Nikon zooms, albeit only up to 300mm, and a better 300mm fixed
focal length lens, with very nice results.
Based solely on watching that happen, my suggestion to the person who asked the
question would be: Get thee to E-bay!

And I had said, this is heavy and cumbersome albeit cheap.
It is now used more for the fun of using old glass I had once dreamt of than
for the results …
