This is an old concept. I never saw it for on the sensor use, though.
Earlier iterations used a slot between the film or sensor and the back of
the lens. Some video cameras had an 85 filter that you dialed in when you
stepped outside. Sure beat rebalancing the white.
In news, we almost always used indoor/tungsten balanced film, so when we
moved outside it was necessary to put an 85 filter on the lens to balance
for daylight, usually, it was an 85ND3 to cut down the light with a stop of
Neutral density.
