Hi David, try the blur brush, looks like a raindrop, do the large areas with a wide brush and then do the fine bits with a narrow brush with the image size blown right up until you can see the pixels. I find that it works best when set to "airbrush" (icon on the top toolbar). I'm not that advanced yet, but I've been reading about masking and "history brush" for doing this kind of work - probably someone else can say more about this.
