In response to several requests, both on & off list, here is Ngaio.... our new
Her name is Nyoh - pronounced N-eye-oh. The Nyoh is a phonetic spelling of the
Maori name, Ngaio, meaning "clever", which she is.
When Rose first told me what she wanted to call our new pup, we were in the
car, driving away from the Quilchena-area ranch from which we got her, just
last Thursday afternoon. Over the road noise (dirt road!) I heard My-oh, rather
than Ny-oh, and I thought it a great name. Of course, with a first name like
My-oh, the last name HAD to "Naise"! ;-)
She's a 7 month old, Border-Collie/Australian Kelpie cross. As I'm sure you
know, Border Collies are bred to herd sheep. If you don't know the Kelpie
breed (I didn't until a few days ago), they are an Australian cattle herding
dog. So she's very high energy, which explains the photo problem. Let me tell
you, she's quick!
She'll be slightly smaller than a border-collie when fully grown... but already
larger than her dad, who is a papered Kelpie.
She's smart, quiet, gentle and very affectionate. And she's learning to live
with two geriatric cats. We are delighted, even if the cats are not.
Oh... as for the name? Rose and I have reached a compromise. I call her Myoh,
and Rose calls her Nyoh ... and the dog can't tell the difference!
