Thanks Doug - sounds like film to CD is the way to go. BTW, you're whetting my appetite for a digital Leica SLR sooner than my wallet (or wife) will allow...

Is that why you use a film scanner? How does
film to digital quality compare with that of
a high quality digital camera?

Paul, for my C41 photos I routinely have a CD made, and no prints.
Developing film is very inexpensive this way. The scans at the lab
(Target's minilab) are good enough for web use and in many cases they're
fine for smaller prints. Scanning myself gives me much more control over
the file quality so where I want larger prints or the minilab scan isn't
good enough I'll re-scan the negative with my 4000 dpi scanner.

I'm also using the DMR on my R8. This equipment gives me excellent quality
files, and at higher ISO settings such as 400 the picture quality is
significantly better than ISO 400 film in terms of grain/noise and detail.
The DMR has excellent dynamic range but then so does most color negative
film. I haven't done a direct comparison between DMR and C41 dynamic
range, but compared with slide films the DMR's dynamic range is
signifcantly better. The really big advantage of digital for me is the
instant feedback. By reviewing the histograms I can fine-tune exposure to
avoid clipped highlights or blocked-up shadows. This has been a huge
benefit when photographing birds with large areas of white and/or black
plumage.

I'll never use film in the R8 again... but that's because I also have an SL
or two ;-). The SL's viewfinder is incomparable. I can focus a lens on
the SL much more easily, more quickly and accurately than on any other
camera. Less film waste from mis-focussed pictures. The DMR lets me waste
a few more pictures while bracketing focus because the incremental cost of
each picture is only my time reviewing them.
