Hi Bill!
The Olympus scandal you refer to was back in 2011. Various top-ranking
corporate officers got jail sentences and Oly has pretty much recovered from it.
BTW: I highly recommend the book "Exposure", by Michael Woodford, the British
born CEO of Olympus who exposed the scandal. It reads like a crime thriller,
and should be required reading for every photographer or student of business.
I believe that Nikon's financial woes (and risk of going away) are greater that
those of Olympus.

Two things come to mind:
The terrible Olympus management scandal and melt down a year or more ago
with a need to refocus the companies product lines.
The current state of the camera market, now decimated by the rise of the
smart phone among other things.
But you know all this.
You may not be aware of the rumors of the Nikon problems that threaten
its existence as a stand alone firm.
Google "Nikon financial problems" for more.
