The Iron Gates often refers to an 83 mile-long stretch of the Danube River
separating Serbia and Romania.
More specifically, it is a complex of two hydro-electric dams & power stations
which hold the water back, creating the gorge. - along with a set of locks, for
navigation.
The dams generate (we are told) 30% of Romania's power and 100% of Serbia's
electrical needs.
We approached the locks just after dawn, and it was only when we got fairly
close that they emerged from the mist.
