Some Leica trivia: Last night, here in California, I watched Episode 1 of Season 6 of the TV series, "Mad Men," on the AMC Channel, and I'd give it mixed reviews, say, B+, but ... The series is about an advertising firm, is set in the 1960s in New York City, and is acclaimed for getting the dialogue, clothes, office settings, business and personal ethics (or lack thereof) dead-on from that era. Imagine my surprise when Don Draper, the leading male character, offers his apartment-house neighbor, who is a doctor, a free Leica. I almost fell off my sofa. He says, Just drop by my office and I'll give you a Leica. And later, he does, but the camera is still boxed, and the box seems to be mostly red, which I hope was authentic. It was an incredible example of product placement in a theatrical setting, for which, as you may know, many firms pay big money; having a leading star in a big movie or TV program, which is seen by millions, handle or use your product is worth big money. Or, it may have been just a lucky break for Leica, if you believe in that sort of things.
