Here's the full story of the P-51, Hangar 11 also own a few other historical WWII aircraft.

Deeply embedded in the News section is this article about the repaint:

"Whilst "JJ" is well known as perhaps the most handsome Mustang in the country her paintwork was starting to show some signs of wear, having been applied in the late 1980’s when she was based in France. In December it was decided to take the opportunity to re-spray her but the big decision was do we go back to her original paint scheme of 332nd Fighter Group, a Tuskegee 'Red Tail', or do we stick with her more familiar 3rd Air Commando Group (5th Air force) scheme as 'Jumpin’-Jacques'? We decided to stay with her better known identity, so currently we are in the lengthy process of stripping paint, rubbing down and preparing to re-paint. As part of this process, the Hangar 11 team have undertaken exhaustive research to ensure that every aspect of the national insignia, stencilling and artwork are historically correct. That entire aspect is being orchestrated by Steve Atkin of 'Warbird Colour Services'. Steve is very passionate about authenticity of warbird paint schemes and anyone who has seen the Seafire 17 operated by our neighbours, Kennet Aviation, will be familiar with his work. "

Hi Doug
Glad I'm not the only one who likes the old Lizzie! I built a flying model when I was a kid - and liked it so much I never risked flying it!! If you'd like some more photographs of it, I'll post some when I get back from holiday.

More info on the P51D. I was wrong; it fought in Italy, but I think it has Pacific livery now (Anyone?) It flew in Italy in the 332nd Red Tail squadron, of Tuskegee fame. As I said, it had a hard life, and has never had the battle damage repaired. Fantastic flyer, and a swine to photograph - very fast. And that distinctive cooler whine.........
Cheers
Keith
