Hi Douglas!

I've had the pleasure to meet Dr. Kaufmann, several times, and he is a fine
man. I'm afraid I am unaware of Blackstone's involvement.

For those also unaware, it's old news, but the details are here:

Still, I would not call Leica "innovative", these days. In 2006. when I first
met Dr. Kaufmann, he said that Leica were going to forge ahead, without the
endless stream of "special" or "collectible" models. Yet they continue.

Dr. Kaufmann has done wondrous things with Leica... a firm that, without him,
was headed for extinction. But, I would not call them "innovative"... unless
you call finally getting on the digital bandwagon (M8 & S2) innovative. To me,
they are more evolutionary, while the "T" is more a collectors/luxury camera
than a users machine.

If Leica wanted to innovate, they should have followed through with the DMR
for the R8 and R9. I personally owned one and think the DMR could have been a
game changer in the industry by giving photographers an upgrade path to newer
sensors without throwing away a perfectly good body. In fact, I suggested it to
then President, Steven Lee, noting that when they offered an upgraded back,
they could still offer the older generation(s), albiet at a lower price. I
think such a camera could have been a winner, but they obviously did not agree.

But, it would have been innovative.

Still, I cannot argue with the financial success and growth Herr Kaufmann has
brought to a dying firm. That's for sure!

David.
