The school has a Rebel and I dislike the viewfinder. I have tried the new
Rebel (Xt???) and it was a bit better, but not much. I tried the 20D and it
is better than both Rebels, but no where near the R8/9 viewfinder. I don't
know that it is too dark, but it is much harder to focus, even with a
Sumicron or my beloved 100 APO mounted. Everyone's eyes are different, so I
am glad it works for you, but I am still at a point where I would love the
viewfinder of the R8/9 but can't afford the DMR.

One oft overlooked aspect of the 20D is the smaller size of the finder. However, as an eyeglass wearer, I find it easier to view the entire field with the 20D than with the R8! Certainly, the 20D finder is not as bright as the R8, but try it with any Summicron in broad daylight before you tell me it's too dark!
