To: leicareflex@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Thursday, June 11, 2009, 9:19 AM Here’s how I used the 2X extender. I used it on any lens it would fit, shot colour slide material and B&W and they always looked just fine. Doesn’t mean they were great photos…. They were just different and pleasing to the eye. On the 280mm 2.8 I’ve locked both the 1.4 and 2x on at the same time producing an f8.0 800mm lens hand holdable!!!!!!!!! And shot a bunch of stuff and it looked cool. Sports or whatever subjects where I required a long reach or fooling about! Now for some incredibly neat pictures, add to this extender set the Leica Macro adapter and it’s pure magic doing macro with an 800mm lens! J My only concern when putting them together the first time was not to damage anything. So with great care and feel of metal to metal I carefully locked them together and just kept adding them, then looking through the view finder. It began to look so cool I could hardly wait to start shooting. Did so and the Kodachrome looked beautiful. J After I had done this a number of times I called Leica for advice whether it was a good or bad idea and or would it damage the lens? Technician replied… “We do not recommend doing this!” I asked “Why what would happen?” Techs response was again… “We don’t recommend this!” No real common sense reason why I shouldn’t do it. When pressed he could only come up with , “well the quality wont be as perfect as a Leica lens should be.” Me? “OK if that’s all you can tell me and it wont damage lens or extenders then consider this. I’ve already shot many frames of Kodachrome with it when necessary or I was fooling around, end result? I was pleased, editor was pleased and I have some neat photographs! Oh and the quality may not be test bench perfect, but the photos will knock your socks off!” Just me and the KISS principle! J Sometimes the over the hill technical questioning stifles creativity, just go for it and live with the results, makes for a great feel of the magic of photography, certainly when one is playing without thinking about the techie stuff. A quick question: is this lens parfocal or does the focus change while zooming. My 75-200 is the latter, which is a bit annoying.
