When I read your post, I thought "how could anyone make such a mistake?".
After all, I've been shooting digital since 2005 and never made such a mistake.
(Pride goeth before the fall.)
But, then, on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning (the electrical outage
photos) I made exactly the same mistake. As you say, "Stuff Happens".
Rather than convert to B&W, I used my regular RAW converter, Raw Therapee.
Under White Balance it offers "Camera" (where I always have it), "Auto", and 10
other, more specific options, from Daylight to Underwater.
I simply chose Auto, and you can see the results on this list (power outage).
I was impressed how good the results were with "auto", and did little or no
tweaking, after the fact.
Since you shoot in RAW, I'd suggest you download RT (it's open-source, thus,
free) and try redoing your 'gator shots, with the Auto setting. If it doesn't
work, or you find you just don't like it, it's easy enough to uninstall.

Try it. If nothing else, it may occasionally save your bacon, as it did mine.

Good morning again to everyone. I messed up this past Sunday while
taking photos in the Hillsborough River State Park. I forgot to
check the White Balance setting before launching into a frenzy of
playing with multiple exposure at the push and hold of the button.
Now, I understand first hand what Howard would write about when he
was photographing the Eagles at the docks with his Nikon and would
have run thru hundreds of images by the end of the day. I didn't
run up anything but a fraction of that but they all came out with a
decidedly blueish cast that I just could not get rid of in editing.
I went back to find that the WB had been set to Fluorescent
lighting... that's when I decided to go back and convert to black &
white, and it worked out kinda good...or at least better than the
blue overcast... Either way I'm pretty sure that my and anyone else's
blood pressure and respiration rate would have been a wee elevated
if we were swimming in this part of the river, Sunday. This one
would have even caught Clyde Butcher's attention... :)
