Xavier - do you know which Olympus model? Are they available yet? I'm always checking http://www.dpreview.com/ to see if there is anything new on the Leica digital front. Also, you mentioned a 5MP format with the Olympus. Leica's is supposed to be 11MP, right? I, too, wonder if the R digital back will be optimum for the existing lenses. I have quite an investment in R equipment, but could pretty well set up a whole new digital system for the $5000+ Leica is aiming at as a market price, just for the back. Also, I can't find an "buzz" anywhere on the new R back. Are there testers out there? Is Leica on schedule with the product? With Photokina only weeks away, I would think some kind of announcements would be out by now. I've been in the digital "hybrid" mode for a long time now, capturing on film, then using the Imacon Flextight film scanner for high quality digital to put into the Photoshop workflow. I'm getting anxious to start capturing digital with the camera and seriously wondering whether to stay with Leica. Anybody else getting antsy? BTW, Xavier - you didn't sound OT at all! We need to know now if Leica plans on staying five years behind the digital curve like they did with SLRs over 30 years ago. While buying a set of Provia Film for the trip next week, I have spent some minutes reading my Street Corner's photog documents. The guys are representing Olympus and they are pushing in the new SLR Digital from the firm. A 5MP with a 4/3 chip made by Kodak. Remember that the awaited data back for the R9 is made on an equivalent CCD by Kodak! The samples are stunning, as good as a Medium Format or a Leica R with a fine grain film! Olympus started from nil to build the camera, new body, new chassis, new optics, etc. In fact they did like with the OM1 serie. It gives a CCD of 13x17.5 mm, half of the 135 format, the "standard" lens is 25mm of focal. The new bayonet is Royalty free, the electrical interface is public, Sigma has already announced lenses. The ES1 body built on magnesium weight 660g without battery, the battery lastes 500 pictures and it takes IBM microdrive. In Alfort we have the famous Ecole Veterinaire, a training and research institute of National level. They already bought a couple with the 50mm Macro (remember, the standard is 25mm, right?) The lenses are surprisingly small. Of course, you only need a 300 or a 200mm to fetch that birdy on top of the elephant far away, it helps. The wide angles are not well represented though, nothing larger than 12mm (half of 25mm, a nice perspective, believe me!). The body has some presets in the balance of White, bye bye Tungsten 540 and others. Speeds are 100 to 3200 ISO. Comfy. Honnestly, it is a much better system than anything since it is tailored to a purpose rather than the adpatation to the existing. Only, I'm repulsed by the MMI Man Machine Interface, so many Jogs/Dials.... The lenses are really built to match the CCD and the shutter. Hmmm, I wonder if the data back of R system wil be as good..... Me think it is already dead before it reaches the market. Why? Optics are not built for the Digital but rather for the 135 film. What do you think? --------------------------------- Xavier F.
