The step pyramid of Saqquarah is my favorite. Now, the road to Memphis and
Saqquarah is partly a highway but in my time quarter of century ago, it was a
small road by a stinky canal.
Then one would turn right between two date trees orchards, drive for a km and
then bang, the desert, a small bumpy road going uphill at a left turn, the
pyramid appears, after the house, rather camp of the French who worked on it
from the 60s,
There are other pyramids but they all collapsed, only a heap of stone is what's
left.
It was often that I would drive there on Friday back in 91/94 with my Peugeot
405. On way back there was a small restaurant serving nice kebabs and chicken
grilled on charcoal. A nice joint unknown by tourists. The last time I went
there, there is an hotel replacing the joint (in 2004...)
But Saqquarah is still a place of active archeology, the whole area of Memphis
(No Elvis' tomb there ....).
Damn, Time flew away....
