I keep wondering, how do you manage to get the birds so good in focus ? Any
tips about your technique or should i search the archives ?

In the R8 I use a plain matte viewscreen so that I can focus equally well
anywhere in the picture area, and practice, practice, practice!

What works for me is to maximize contrast instead of trying to get maximum
detail in the area(s) I want in focus. You'll get maximum contrast when
the area is focussed correctly, but our eyes are better able to percieve
the contrast than to discern the difference in detail between 'in focus'
and 'not quite in focus'.

It's a technique that was used with excellent success by many
photojournalists in the 1960s and 1970s. When I first used this technique
I was using Nikon cameras with the E viewscreen, a plain matte screen with
grid lines. The grid lines provided a subconscious reference point for
'darkest black'. The crop marks of the R8 plain matte screen for DMR serve
the same purpose as the grid lines of the Nikon E viewscreen.

Thanks for looking, and for your comments.
