Are they shot in RAW mode?  Have you tried lightroom?  I have been able to 
rescue many shots in RAW mode using Lightroom to pull detail from the shadows 
and then reduce the noise using the controls provided.

Thanks Aram,

I've a couple more I'm working on - the problem is they are so dark that 
lightening them at all begins to make a lot of blotchy noise in the 
shadows - has anyone any ideas (apart from ditching them completely)
