Good morning, Bill. Thanks for the links. The YouTube clip of the song still
has me smiling. My younger sister and I used to play with a "call and response”
version to the first part of the song. We had heard the recording played at our
grand mother’s house in Baton Rouge LA and we both couldn’t stop laughing as
seven and four year olds - it became a reflex condition for years after that,
much to our Mom’s displeasure. Our dog at the time, Oreo, would join into
sometimes, too, much the our Dad’s displeasure. :)
Yes, Aram is right - I had no idea about the burning embers story. Thanks for
opening up another item to think about. As a specie we sure are a curiosity,
aren’t we? Yep, makes perfect sense - kicking burning embers off a cliff… above
a forest? :)
Best regards,
Peter S

Peter S,
The Fire-fall at Yosemite is not the same thing as the late sunset light
inflaming Horsetail Falls. Far from it.
The Fire-fall was a huge bonfire up at Glacier Point that was lighted about
dark and after it was fully burning it was pushed over the cliff to stream
down towards Camp Curry, while a baritone sang a song entitled Indian Love
Call. That’s what I saw in 1955.
Here’s the dope on the fire-fall

Thanks, Aram. I had no idea that it had become such an “event”. Thanks for
the image and the description of the location and the potential
disappointments. It does offer a brilliant opportunity for a beautiful
moment, and I’m always intrigued by such rare occurrence, much like the
fondness for eclipses that many here on the list have. So, if you do attempt
again I hope you enjoy clear view and moderate temps. :)

Hi Peter. Well, I attempted to do so. We went down in 2013 and it was
bitter cold to be camping, which we were. I think we were there four night
to try and get the falls. It was early in the California drought, so not
much water. The first night I was ready and about 30 min before the
“event” it clouded over. Then next night I think it was always cloudy, but
we waited out in the cold bundled up to no avail. The third night it
looked promising, but about 15 minutes before the event it clouded over
again. The last night was perfect, but unfortunately it had been so cold
that the flow to the falls all but stopped. This is what I got:

Nice light on an almost dry wall. If you look carefully you can see a wisp
of water.
I have not been back, and it is about 900 miles and I want a good chance of
success. Starting last year they have made parking a lottery event, as the
crowds have gotten massive. So, even if you go you might not be able to
park close by. It would amount to a 4 mile walk to get there from the
nearest public parking areas and they you would have to hike back after
dark. But maybe after I get my knee fixed I might want to try it again
some year. The weather has to be right, like lots of water the clearing.
The reservoir that feeds horsetail falls is not very big, so it dries up
quickly or freezes up as it did in 2013. Yet most every year since I went
I see nice photos taken, but they lucky to have a clear night during the
7-10 days that the sun lines up for this event. I want better odds and
clear roads to drive on. I don’t want to have to put chains on my little
RV to get there.

Subject: [LRflex] Has Anyone Here Ever Seen The Yosemite "Fire-fall" In
Person?
Hiya folks. Say, I keep forgetting to ask this over the last couple of
years around here; but does anyone have any images of the “Fire-fall” from
Yosemite? The image posted below is not mine, but it was the trigger that
reminded me to ask if anyone here on the list has any images of it that
they’d care to share. Thanks.
