As David said, opening and closing the file does nothing to the file
other than allow you to see it. If you open it in an editor and make
changes, then when you resave the file either over the old one, or as a
new file, your image is degraded. How much? I don't know. How many
times until it is visible? I don't know. And I think it would be very
subject and edit dependent as to if you would ever see it from one to
the next. Now, if you were working on deep shadows or highlights and
did this a few dozen times I'll be you could see significant differences
when comparing it to the original.
So, the old adage "look but do not touch" your mother told you in the
china store holds true. Look as often as you like, but only touch when
you want to buy.

Good morning to you all. Could I please ask for advice concerning the use of JPEG files for archiving images? For those of you who work predominately with JPEGs have you noted an obvious degradation of image quality with repeated opening and viewing of the files? I am wondering how many times can a “lossy” file, such as JPEG, be opened and viewed before the file starts to show signs of the image degrading?------
Thanks.
