True enough.  I made my own BW for years and was delighted in the
1970s when I got a Production job (after decades in news) and had
access to a custom color lab that would print images just the way I
wanted them.  There was one monochromatic sunset at a lighthouse that
I had printed in about seven different colors.

Not a bit.  But on my screen, I see blown highlights in the flower
petals on the one you did.  Though they both look nice to me, viewed

As far as dark, we have had this discussion before.  They look dark on
my calibrated monitors, too.  Personal preference  I am sure.  I have my
brightness set to about 110 cd/m2 as it gives me good agreement between
my screen and prints I make either on
my printer or at Costco.  I tried a little experiment.  I downloaded
Sonny's image and put it in PS and overlaid the histogram.  Not much
on the white end.  Then I adjusted the white balance with the
histogram and overlaid that histogram.  It is more to
my liking, but it is not my image.  Here are the results for
comparison.  View large to see the histogram better.

Yes, they are blackberry blooms.  Each stamen turns into a seed on a
berry, but I'm no expert on flowers.


If you're not teasing about the dark, (which I don't see on three
monitors, a iPad Pro, and my iPhone X) then perhaps you need to check
your monitor, or resign yourself that I'm shooting in situ, available
light, and where I find them.  I usually spend
much more time editing than shooting, and my aim is always a pleasant
image drawing attention to the bloom.  I usually subdue the background
as much as possible, avoiding blooming (heh) of the whites. Thus this
image not only has vignette applied, but I've
also dodged bright spots in the bokeh.
